Carpet has been unfairly blamed as a contributor to asthma, allergies, and for emitting high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Truth be told, CARPET IS OUR ALLY; like a filter it can “trap” and damper the ambient air particles (dander, pollen, dust and other contaminants) that can cause problems. For instance, you know those dark lines at the edge of your room, under doors or the edge of steps? Those are called FILTRATION lines. They get that name because of how they develop. All the dirt, soot, pollen, and pollutants sift through every crack of the house and are “caught” by the carpet fibers .
Take the carpet out and all this dirt, soot, pollen, pollutants, etc. will be left circulating in the air for you breath. Without carpeting, it will finally blow onto your upholstery, rugs, drapes, or even clothes! Doctors tell us that dirt and dust are the primary causes of most allergies. Over time, the contaminants will build up — and you can imagine what all that will do to your health as you breath those nasty microorganisms in on a daily basis. Cleaning and/or replacing ALL those items are NOT CHEAP OR SIMPLE. Do yourself a favor and leave your carpet, however, clean and maintain it properly!
For most of us, carpet is a perfect floor covering. However, a dirty carpet is the ideal place for bacteria and germs to multiply and grow. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also recognizes the effect of unhealthy indoor air and the link it has with carpet cleaning.
You may feel content with your own efforts of vacuuming and frequent ‘Bissel cleanings’, but keep in mind you only pick up about 15% of the soil and allergens. What is left is where ‘steam cleaning’ or Hot Water Extraction (HWE) shines because it rinses it out and away from your carpet. Under powered carpet cleaning machines such as Bissels or Grocery store rental units leave residues behind allowing dirt and allergens to cling to this residue, creating an unhealthy condition for sensitive people.
The preferred way to do HWE is to use powerful truck-mounted equipment with the injection of clear hot water with immediate extraction of all pretreatments, residues, soil, and allergens out of the carpet into a specially designed wastewater holding tank. Annual HWE or ‘steam cleaning’ is recommended, sometimes more depending on the use of the area (pets). Periodic deep-cleaning your carpet will remove any contaminants before they overflow the carpet "reservoir" and enter the breathing zone.
The carpet is left only slightly damp after cleaning and can be used right away. Complete drying time is about 1 to 4 hours depending on the carpet and weather conditions. The final result is a carpet that is clean, fresh smelling, and free of allergens that greatly improves your indoor air quality, creating the truly low cost and low maintenance Healthy Home.
