Eliminate or at least delay the need for restoration by doing two things:
1. Immediately apply a clear impregnating sealant after installation or a thorough cleaning
2. Frequent cleanings with just a neutral pH cleaner
Sealant should be reapplied every two years.
Two simple steps to keep a beautiful and permanent addition to any architectural design, yet so easily ignored. That is all that’s needed if you have a honed (dull or matted) finish, i.e. Slate, sandstone , or travertine.
However, you may have a polished travertine, marble, or even a limestone floor. In this case, you will need a bit more maintenance to retain that shine. Every 12-18 months you’ll need to clean as well as re-polish the floor before reapplying the sealant.
There are two methods for re-polishing; chemical (crystallizing) or mechanical (diamond grinding).. Crystallization alters your stone and can be damaging. Today, the mechanical method has become easy and relatively low cost and is the preferable means of polishing without the eventual damage. This is the only method we use at ACS.
An installation of marble tiles with visible grout lines will create a dilemma. In order for the grout to be cleaned a stronger alkaline solution must be used and it will dull the stone's polished finish. In this case, expect a re-polishing charge. Seal and clean frequently as outlined above and delay the restoration.
If you are a bit more proactive and keen on good maintenance, ACS can schedule frequent clean and polish treatments for your facility. We will keep that floor shiny for you!
FYI…Granite floors are made of a durable crystalline rock. They are hard, tough, and resist abrasion as well as most chemical attack. Granite (stone or tile) usually does not need polishing.
